Mollie Reid
Mollie is a PhD candidate primarily under the supervision of Dr Vladislav Sorokin at University of Auckland having moved to New Zealand in 2023. Originally from Scotland, she achieved a Master’s degree with distinction from Glasgow Caledonian University where her thesis included the design and analysis of a pico hydro turbine.
Mollie’s PhD research focuses on the design and optimisation of small-scale wave energy converters. During her preliminary year she has focused on pendulum dynamics with a scope to low frequency wave energy harvesting. Work has included numerical analysis and both simulated and laboratory experiments. Low speed, high amplitude shakers have been used to excite a pendulum based, prototype, power take off device in various directions.
Below are the figures showing the pendulum system considered and a preliminary experimental setupÂ
